3. AI Governance and Insurance: What’s it all Mean Anyway?

Amidst the regulatory uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence in insurance, regulators have consistently emphasized the need for insurers to implement an AI governance program. The NAIC adopted a Model Bulletin in 2023 on the use of AI in insurance. Twenty-four insurance departments have adopted the bulletin, which includes governance program expectations, so far. So, what does it all mean, and how do insurers navigate implementing AI governance? This session will arm participants with information on AI governance by walking through the current regulatory environment and requirements that exist around AI governance; and presenting insights from NAMIC member Harford Mutual on how it has established its governance framework utilizing existing guidance.
