Nearly 4,700 auto dealers have sent a letter asking President Biden to “hit the brakes” entirely on a proposed government electric vehicle mandate, saying the administration did not respond to an earlier request to “tap the brakes.”
Proposed rules from the Environmental Protection Agency would require automakers to ensure their new product lines meet more stringent emissions standards beginning in 2027. To meet these requirements, those manufacturers would likely expand EV production.
The group cited several factors they say indicate slowing EV adoption, including fewer vehicles qualifying for federal tax credits and lackluster efforts to increase EV infrastructure. If anything, however, the administration is ramping up its efforts, with proposed guidance this month that the Wall Street Journal reports would let two-thirds of the U.S. population qualify at “low income” and “non-urban” for the “alternative fuel vehicle refueling property” credit initially implemented for businesses to install a charging station.
