NAMIC met with Acting Administrator Sophie Shulman and her senior staff Feb. 7 at the Department of Transportation. Among the topics discussed were the administration’s progress on rules and proposed rules relating to automatic emergency braking, distracted/impaired driving, lane departure warnings, seat back standards, rear seat belt reminders and New Car Assessment Program Safety Labeling. NAMIC specifically thanked NHTSA for its development of a designated autonomous vehicle safety group, and NHTSA committed to work with NAMIC members in developing automated vehicle safety standards.
Shulman has assumed the acting administrator role following the departure of Ann Carlson, who resigned due to statutory limitations on how long officials can remain in a temporary role as acting administrator. President Biden withdrew a nomination for her to serve permanently in the position in May of 2023, and no replacement nominee has been named.
