The Federal Highway Administration issued a notice of proposed rulemaking Feb. 21 to update the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
FHWA proposes to amend the regulatory language to require state transportation departments to incorporate the DOT five-pronged Safe System Approach to get DOT funding. These changes are designed to “further strengthen and advance the safety and equity priorities of the DOT National Roadway Safety Strategy.”
DOT’s Equity Action Plan has four focus areas – “wealth creation, power of community, interventions, and expanding access – to expand access and opportunity to all communities while focusing on underserved, overburdened, and disadvantaged communities.”
Comments on the proposal must be received on or before April 22, and NAMIC would like to work with any interested members in drafting comments.
