A. Reinsurance Lessons Learned - Panel Discussion

This panel discussion will cover the hot topic of the current reinsurance climate, including conversation on the lessons learned so far and what can be expected moving forward. Attendees will hear from a state association leader, company managers, and a reinsurer for multiple perspectives on this important issue. Topics will include the importance of communication and what changes mutuals have already implemented in the reinsurance space that have made a difference in 2024. Panelists will also discuss what reinsurance companies are doing to protect their future relationships with reinsurers the importance of understanding and evaluating insurance to value and coverage limitations.

2:00 PM - 2:45 PM

B. Mastering the Art of Negotiation

Negotiation is among the most critical competencies for casualty claims organizations. In the current environment, the importance of negotiation in reaching reasonable settlements has never been more pronounced. Industry trends show a staggering 49% increase in the cost of resolving third-party personal injury claims between 2017 and 2022. This trend is unsustainable. This presentation and discussion will lay out a negotiation program that we have helped two NAMIC member companies implement. The impact on the resolution of their injury claims has been dramatic. The presentation will break this dilemma into two parts. First, why is this happening? Second, what can be done about it? The first section will separate the glitzy topics like “social inflation” and “nuclear verdicts” which are real but in fact impact a minority of claims from the claims processes that are contributing to this result. We will review how everyday resolution processes are gamed by plaintiff attorneys very successfully to achieve unreasonable settlements. The second section will hone in on a process that works (and the evidence that it works), the skills that drive it, and how to implement it.

2:00 PM - 2:45 PM

C. The High Performing Board: Succession, Onboarding, and Education

B. Building Codes: A Tool For Mitigation

The development of modern building codes and their ability to reduce the damage disruption and displacement that often comes with natural hazards has been an unheralded engineering and scientific success story.

Building codes are the safety standards for our built environment, and they also play a significant role in shaping the resilience or lack thereof of the communities of tomorrow. The adoption of modern building codes has repeatedly shown its ability to reduce damage and financial loss. Multiple studies by the National Institute of Building Science (NIBS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have shown that investing in modern code construction can save anywhere from a 4 to 1 to an 8 to 1 ratio for every dollar invested in a modern system of codes. A review of structural damage from Hurricane Ian by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) estimated that the modern Florida Building Code saved up to $3 billion to single-family homes alone.

Despite the proven resilience offered by modern codes, only 17 states have statewide, uniformly enforced building code systems. Many of the states without a statewide, uniformly enforced building code face the brunt of severe convective storm impacts. In this session, we will explore the history of building codes in the United States and how we arrived at the code structure we have today. We will also cover the ability of building codes and their system of protections to be a tool to mitigate the impact of windstorms and wildfires.

3:00 PM - 3:45 PM

C. Competing for Talent in a VUCA Environment: Hot Topics in Compensation

In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, attracting, retaining, and motivating talent is anything but normal. Every day, employers feel the pressure from multiple workplace changes that have occurred since 2020. For many Human Resources and Total Rewards practitioners, attracting and retaining talent in a hot market feels like a daily struggle – one that can’t be won.

This session will examine several pressure points impacting employers. These external influences include and are not limited to:

  • Increases in base pay rates for employees at all organizational levels due to economic and labor market changes,
  • Variable compensation program changes to more closely support organizational performance,
  • Employees’ on-going remote work expectations and impacts on Total Rewards packages, and
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts brought to the forefront of the national conversation on compensation.
Attendees will gain an understanding of each topic’s impacts on Human Resources and Total Rewards. Competing for Talent in a VUCA Environment: Hot Topics in Compensation will explore multiple approaches for successfully addressing each pressure point through effective programs and policies.

After this fast-paced session, attendees will come away with practical tips to use in their organizations right away, as well as food for thought & future implementation.
