After the final reception and grand end-of-convention dinner, attendees and their guests will have the opportunity to work off some calories during Convention’s Closing Celebration when musical group Yacht Rock Revue and its special guests Robbie Dupree and Matthew Wilder hit the stage.
If you have never heard of yacht rock, you are in for a wonderful surprise. The genre was one of the most commercially successful genres of its era – 1970s and 1980s – drawing on styles such as smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, funk, and disco. And, if you didn’t know, the term “yacht rock” refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that came from Southern California meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne and eating caviar on their yachts.
From Hall and Oates, Kenny Loggins, and Paul Simon to one-hit wonders like Looking Glass (remember “Brandy”?) to Player (who could forget “Baby Come Back”?), YRR has gone far beyond the tribute category by regularly joining their heroes, such as Dupree and Wilder, on stage to help rock the house, making this year’s Convention celebration one of the best.
