The nature of mutuality presents various opportunities and challenges for insurance companies when determining board compensation levels. Common tools used by stock-owned such as stock options, generally are not available for mutuals, which are owned by policyholders, not shareholders. To remain competitive for highly qualifies directors, mutuals must be creative and deliberate when crafting compensation. The NAMIC Board Compensation Survey is designed to help mutual insurance company leaders benchmark director pay structures and board practices with companies similar in size as well as with the industry as a whole.
