National Harbor, Md. – (Sept. 20, 2023) The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies introduced its 2023-2024 board chair, Elizabeth Heck, president, CEO, and chair of Greater New York Mutual Insurance Companies, today during the association’s 128th Annual Convention.

The newly appointed NAMIC chair began her career in insurance in 1990 as senior accounting officer for Home Insurance Company after leaving EY where she audited banks and insurance companies. She spent a five-year stint as controller for GRE Insurance Group before joining Greater New York as vice president and controller. After promotions to chief financial officer and treasurer in 2005 and president and chief operating officer in 2010, Heck took her current position in 2014.

Heck’s introduction to NAMIC came in 2002 when she helped then-president, CEO, and chair of GNY Insurance Companies Warren Heck prepare to speak before Congress regarding the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act. He testified on behalf of NAMIC and the mutual property/casualty insurance industry about the need for this legislation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

It was during this time that NAMIC’s new chair says she realized the power of coordinated advocacy efforts. The association’s focus on advocacy was one of several topics she spoke about when she addressed the convention audience this morning.

“TRIA’s passage was my introduction to the sheer power of speaking with a unified voice,” Heck said. “In the two decades since, I have watched NAMIC’s advocates go to bat for us time and again …. NAMIC is always there, making sure our interests and those of our policyholders are well represented.

“Because NAMIC is attuned to what is happening on every legislative level, [advocates] are able to view these issues holistically, which ensures our unified voice remains loud yet steady.”

During the next 12 months, Heck will serve as a leading spokesperson for NAMIC in meetings with legislators, regulators, and other industry stakeholders. She will also meet with fellow mutual insurance industry professionals and NAMIC members during state association meetings and conventions.
