Senate Moves Towards Data Privacy

Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said July 21 that if Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., does introduce her kids privacy bill with narrowly focused artificial intelligence preemption language – that “it’s my intention to mark it up… I would expect to support it.”

This is a pivot from Cruz’s prior stance – along with other committee priorities such as legislation for name, image and likeness rights in college sports – could cause the timeline to slip from the final week of July, or a hearing could be set in September. That said, the kids privacy bills are different in the House and Senate and would be challenging to find middle ground before the end of the year.
