Our History
For more than 130 years, NAMIC has championed the mutual property/casualty insurance industry—an industry whose foundations stretch back more than 250 years. Together, they share a long and distinguished history of service, resilience, and community focus. Below are key milestones that highlight the evolution of the association within the industry.
NAMIC holds its organizational meeting in Des Moines, Iowa as the National Association of Co-Operative Mutual Insurance Companies
NAMIC holds the organizing convention in Chicago, Illinois
The association renamed itself the American Association of Mutual Insurance Companies to reflect a broader North American focus.
The association is renamed again, this time to the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies
The association’s flagship publication - now known as IN magazine - debuts
NAMIC establishes the Mutual reinsurance Bureau
The association's headquarters moves from Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Indianapolis
NAMIC hosts an event called Conference of Future Risks, which focuses on how insurers can adapt to changing economic and social conditions
The federal government appoints NAMIC members to important positions
The association begins its legislative fly-in initiative, the Congressional Contact Program
NAMIC's executive committee approves the creating of NAMICO
The Washington, D.C. office opens
The association celebrates its 100th anniversary
NAMIC.org launches on the World Wide Web
NAMIC establishes its state and policy affairs department
