NAMIC created the Benjamin Franklin Public Policy Awardİ in honor of Dr. Benjamin Franklin and his commitment to public service. In 1752, Dr. Franklin, with other leading citizens of Philadelphia, founded America's first successful mutual insurance company, The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. This public policy award was established in 2003, and was first presented to the 107th Congress to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Contributionship.
"NAMIC is honored to present this award to members from the 109th Congress who demonstrated their unwavering support and leadership on behalf of NAMIC members, insurance consumers, and the property/casualty insurance industry," said Carl Parks, NAMIC's senior vice president of government affairs.
"The awardees' understanding and support of the insurance industry has helped to successfully protect the free and open market environment that has existed since Mr. Franklin started that first successful mutual insurance company," said Parks.
Each year, NAMIC members travel to Washington, D.C. for a day on Capitol Hill. Known as the Congressional Contact Program (CCP), this annual event has established itself as the foundation of NAMIC's effective grassroots advocacy and is conducted in partnership with property/casualty insurance company state associations. Now in existence for more than 20 years, CCP has become one of the premier annual lobbying events on Capitol Hill. It is in combination with this program that the award is presented.

As a "minuteman," you will be in the know at the critical moment when a call to action is necessary or when decisions are being made on issues like federal regulation of insurance, legal reform, terrorism insurance, asbestos reform and small property/casualty company taxation.
Every two years, NAMIC presents their coveted Benjamin Franklin Public Policy Award© to lawmakers who have supported a stronger insurance market at least 75 percent of the time. This is demonstrated based on their support of NAMIC's position on certain roll call votes taken, or being a principal player/sponsor on legislation affected the property/casualty insurance industry, during the previous Congress.
