NAMIC Names Moore, Denham 2018 Federal Legislators of the Year

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies today named Reps. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., and Jeff Denham, R-Calif., as Federal Legislators of the Year during the association’s annual convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Moore was honored for her work to protect state-based insurance regulation through HR 3746, the Business of Insurance Regulatory Reform Act of 2017, and the International Insurance Standards Act, HR 4537. HR 3746 clarifies federal law to ensure the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau cannot encroach on states’ authority to regulate insurance, while HR 4537 would protect state regulation from being undermined through international trade negotiations.

“Congresswoman Moore recognized that state regulators who have protected consumers for more than 150 years are best positioned to continue serving them,” said Jimi Grande, senior vice president of government affairs for NAMIC. “And not only that, she also reached across the aisle to build bipartisan support for protecting our state-based insurance regulatory system from federal encroachment.”

Moore expressed her appreciation for the award, and the value that the insurance industry provides for all Americans.

"I am honored to accept the NAMIC 2018 Federal Legislator of the Year award,” said Moore. “In Congress, I work hard to write and pass legislation that serves and protects my constituents in Milwaukee and American families across the country. Financial security is a large part of this effort, and I am thankful for NAMIC’s advocacy for legislation that promotes an ethical and stable insurance industry."

Denham was honored for his longstanding support for stronger federal disaster mitigation policies. He introduced the Supporting Mitigation Activities and Resiliency Targets for Rebuilding Act, also known as the SMART Rebuilding Act, provisions of which became law in February 2018.

“Congressman Denham has a been a champion for his constituents and all Americans by fighting to bring common sense to federal disaster policy,” Grande said, adding that Denham’s work will make America’s communities better able to protect themselves from natural disasters."

"Investing in disaster response and mitigation saves lives," said Denham. “My SMART Rebuilding Act will enhance building standards across the board and I’m honored to work with NAMIC to build safer communities.”

Each year, NAMIC honors federal lawmakers who have been leaders on the issues of great importance to the insurance industry as Legislators of the Year. The award bears the likeness of Ben Franklin, one of the nation’s founding fathers who in 1752 established a mutual insurance company that, as a NAMIC member, continues to serve policyholders to this day.

“NAMIC is proud to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill and across the country,” Grande said. “We appreciate those who are willing to focus on issues that may not always get headlines, but are vitally important to the American people, and we are proud to name Representatives Gwen Moore and Jeff Denham as our 2018 Federal Legislators of the Year.”
