JOHNSTOWN, NY (August 15, 2013) - Fulmont Mutual Insurance Company, Johnstown, N.Y., reached a milestone most companies only wish they could achieve. In August, the company celebrated 160 years of service. Fulmont, a regional property/casualty insurance company primarily writing business in upstate New York, is recorded as the oldest insurance company of its kind still in existence in New York and is the fourth oldest in the country.
The company, originally named Fulton & Montgomery Counties Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association, was organized by local farmers and businessmen in 1853 for the purpose of insuring against fire and lightning, the most common cause of farm loss. Today, the company writes a variety of business, including homes, mobile homes, farms, inland marine, commercial, and special multi-peril.
