RE: Wisconsin Legislation Strengthening Protections Against ‘Storm Scammers’

“NAMIC urges the Assembly Insurance Committee to approve AB 91, which will strengthen consumer protections against storm scammers, those unscrupulous contractors who swarm from seemingly out of nowhere into areas hit by weather disaster. This bill is an important priority for the 190 NAMIC member insurance companies doing business in Wisconsin.

“In Wisconsin, when disaster hits, the community pulls together. Unfortunately, there are those who prey on the vulnerable at this critical time. Unscrupulous persons, usually from out of state, descend in order take advantage those most in need, especially seniors. They engage in high-pressure pitches for repair services, much of which is either unneeded or performed in a shoddy fashion.

“In addition to practically robbing storm victims, the scammers damage the reputation of and take business from the ethical, local repair companies that have served the community often for years.”
