NAMIC Encouraged by NFIP Vote, Encourages Safe Building Incentives in Future Sandy Bill

"NAMIC welcomes the House of Representatives' scheduled vote on Friday, January 4, to increase the borrowing authority of the National Flood Insurance Program, and we urge the Senate to swiftly follow suit to ensure the federal government meets its obligation to tens of thousands of NFIP policyholders. Extending the NFIP borrowing authority was never opposed by either party, and any further delay will extend the hardships of the victims of Sandy."

"As the House considers the larger Sandy relief bill on January 15, NAMIC urges lawmakers to provide leadership in ensuring that new homes and buildings are constructed in a manner that will mitigate the damages and costs of future natural disasters. Strong building codes protect property, save lives and ultimately reduce taxpayer exposure to natural disasters, and Congress can encourage their use by adopting the Safe Building Code Incentive Act as part of the Sandy relief bill."

"This legislation incentivizes the adoption and enforcement of statewide minimum building safety standards by the states, and has broad bipartisan support in Congress. The bill is also supported by the BuildStrong Coalition, a group of national business and consumer organizations, corporations, and emergency management officials dedicated to stronger building codes, in order to protect homes and buildings from the devastation of natural disasters."
