NAMIC Welcome and Opening Remarks
Join us for a brief welcome and kick off to the Derecho and Severe Weather Virtual Summit.

President and CEO | NAMIC

10:15 – 10:50 a.m.

Derechos: Past, Present, and Future
The severity of the 2020 Midwest derecho is one of the top five largest loss-causing severe convective storm events in United States history. While tornado and hail events have driven the majority of losses for the industry in the last decade, derechos are now front and center. This session will discuss how derechos form, the means by which we can better understand these large severe wind events, and how population growth across the Midwest may alter loss profiles for SCS events now and in the future.

Kimberly Roberts
Senior Vice President | Guy Carpenter

11:30 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.

Catastrophe Models and the Peril of Severe Convective Storm: Modeling for Derechos, Straight-Line Winds, and Other SCS Events
Catastrophe models form an important component of managing severe convective storm risks for all three sub-perils of SCS: hail, tornadoes, and straight-line winds. This session will begin by reviewing the strengths and weaknesses in the variety of approaches used to build SCS models. The conversation will then focus on alternative means to assess SCS risk. The Guy Carpenter Severe Thunderstorm Risk Magnitude Index, which leverages a range of up-to-date information to provide a transparent means to assess SCS risk as well as contributions by sub-perils, will be discussed during this session.

LeeAnn Tomko
Senior Vice President | Guy Carpenter

Jeffrey Schmidt
Assistant Vice President | Guy Carpenter

1:30 – 2:05 p.m.

Severe Weather, Hurricanes, and Wildfires
Catastrophe activity in 2020 made headlines in many ways: 30 named Atlantic storms during hurricane season, record burned acreage from wildfires in California and Colorado, an unprecedented number of billion-dollar SCS events. What is the latest understanding of catastrophe activity? The science behind extreme weather and the implications for catastrophe management will be highlighted during this discussion.

James Waller, Ph.D.
Research Meteorologist | Guy Carpenter

2:45 – 3:20 p.m.

Navigating Today’s Market to Optimize Risk Transfer and Implement Effective Risk Mitigation Solutions
During the last 15 years, reinsurance programs have evolved from mainly capacity-driven decisions to more customized and specific programs to respond to a variety of conditions. Advances in technology, data capture and, more importantly, data access enable us to design custom risk transfer and mitigation solutions to better align with mutual insurance company portfolios. This session will focus on current market conditions and how to best navigate them on a differentiated basis.
