This primary season has been something to watch. Incumbents are being knocked out of their races early; pundits are baffled; and professional prognosticators continue to be surprised. Really though, the excitement has come not from the actual number of incumbents being taken down – which is not (yet) historically high – but from the high-profile losses that have occurred. Whatever the case, there can be no doubt that sitting senators and representatives, from freshmen to party leadership, are having to work extra hard this year to hold on to their seats. Anyone skeptical of that should speak with the still-titular head of the Republican Party, Sen. John McCain, who for a time was in danger of losing his own primary to a former congressman, J.D. Hayworth.
