A Little Last Minute Shopping

As Congress looks to finish all those things put off until after the elections during this holiday season, NAMIC is working to put some last-minute presents under the tree as well. No fewer than three of our legislative priorities could be included in different legislative packages lawmakers are working to pass before the end of the year, and we hope to have a few presents under the tree for our members. Ohio: General Assembly Adopts Multiple Pro-Insurer Reforms

The Ohio Senate passed Amended Substitute House Bill 278 on Dec. 13 by a 33-0 vote to increase the minimum amount of coverage a vehicle owner must carry to maintain valid proof of financial responsibility; remove the requirement that auto insurance rates be based upon municipal boundaries; and change the non-cancellation period for auto insurance policies from two years to one year. Massachusetts: DOI to Hold Meeting on Filing Issues

The Massachusetts Division of Insurance will host a meeting with company representatives responsible for rate and form filings in the state, likely in late February or early March. (Posted: 12/18/2012 2:31:03 PM)

Florida: OIR Streamlines Forms Approval Process

Dec. 3 to clarify how the forms approval process has been streamlined now that “certification” is no longer required in some cases. Gov. Rick Scott announced that the change was imminent during his comments Nov. 30 at the Chamber Insurance Summit. (Posted: 12/18/2012 2:21:33 PM)

House Financial Services Committee Holds Hearing on Volcker Rule

The House Financial Services Committee held a hearing titled “Examining the Impact of the Volcker Rule on Markets, Businesses, Investors and Job Creation, Part II,” on Dec. 13, the second hearing on the proposed Volcker Rule that the committee has held this year. A part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the Volcker Rule prohibits federally insured banks from engaging in proprietary trading and from investing in certain hedge or private equity funds. ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Talks Heat Up
