  1. PFMM: Corporate Governance
    This session will be a review of definitions and developments on the governance structure of mutual companies including policyholders, board members, and officers. It will also explain the various roles and functions of the board of directors and their key duties including the importance of good faith and the relevance of “best practices.” The significance of independent directors and conflicts of interest, board meeting practices and issues, officer liability, and the role of the audit function in governance will also be discussed.

  2. PFMM Advanced: Strategic Visioning & Setting Direction
    In this session, the differences and relationships among mission, vision, and business purpose will be explored along with examining the importance of perspective. Attendees will gain knowledge on the importance of performance metrics, role of structural dynamics, and creating a structural map of the vision and direction of the business. A case study will be used to help apply the new knowledge that is presented.

  2. PFMM Advanced: Determining Appropriate Technology Investment
    Given the diversity of farm mutual insurance companies, it has been difficult to determine which technology investments are appropriate for each company. This session will discuss the technologies that make sense for farm mutuals at different financial positions, as well as guides for determining return on investment. It will also provide several real examples of successful and failed technology investments from mutuals all over the country.

  1. PFMM: Financial Management
    This session is required for those working towards their PFMM.
    This course is designed to review the basic understanding of the financial issues a farm mutual manager will face. These include insurance accounting, managing the growth of premium, and the importance of rate adequacy. Other issues of importance that will be discussed during this presentation include the understanding of: the importance of adequate surplus and reserves, the affect of unearned premium as a liability, and how to develop a budget and establish benchmarks to monitor success.

  2. PFMM Advanced: Board Governance Issues
    In this session, we will discuss practical tips and strategies for practicing good governance including developing governance documents and effective board meeting agendas, implementing effective committee structures, and helping your board to understand the difference between the role of the board and the role of management. Our speaker served on the NAMIC Corporate Governance Task Force, led in the development of the Directors Education Series, and has served a speaker on this subject at other NAMIC events.

This session is required for those working towards their PFMM.

This session is designed to give attendees a history of mutual insurance including how it originated, the differences between mutual companies and other companies, as well as the structure of a mutual company. It never hurts to have a review of the basic information on how our industry began or is structured. Also featured in this presentation is a discussion about the state and federal issues farm mutuals face, as well as how farm mutuals can change and evolve in an ever-changing industry.
