General Session: Neuro-leadership: The Brain, Coaching and Leadership Connection Part II
Ginny will follow her keynote on Integrated Leadership™ with the latest hot topic in leadership development — neuroleadership. In this workshop, she clearly makes the connection between the latest brain research from neuroscientists and her Integrated Leadership™ model. She will explain how the scientific evidence about the way the brain functions supports the success of coaching techniques in changing behaviors. You’ll not only learn about the basic areas of the brain that are involved in learning, decision making, and habit formation, but you’ll also discover what coaching techniques to use for particular kinds of behavioral change and why they work. Ginny also presents findings on the research of brain differences in men and women, helping you to understand how these differences influence the way men and women interact with others, communicate feelings, and lead. As you learn more about the basics of the brain, you’ll be in a better position to help others become more effective at developing productive habits, reframing situations, enhancing emotional intelligence, and changing behavior to improve their leadership. You’ll want away from this workshop, with a greater understanding of …

  • the function of particular areas of the brain and how brain chemistry influences behavior
  • why coaching works from a scientific perspective
  • brain differences in men and women and how those differences influence leadership

And you’ll learn coaching techniques for reshaping the brain, changing behavior, and enhancing leadership abilities — raising self-awareness, focusing attention, developing productive habits, making decisions, reducing stress, maintaining emotional control, building emotional intelligence and communicating across differences.

Concurrent Sessions

  1. Concurrent Session 1: Compensation Strategies in Challenging Economic Times
In the current economic environment does a company adjust its compensation strategy? If adjustments are warranted, how does is this accomplished while maintaining the morale of team members? It becomes a matter of the right compensation strategy, the right form of communication and the timing of the message.

This session will focus on the development of a compensation strategy that is right for the economic environment and business cycle of an organization. We will also discuss the development of an integrated communication strategy to the organization’s employees.

The communications strategy ideally incorporates information the employees need to understand their situation, and shouldn’t be limited just to their compensation, but also the goals and strategies the organization intends to strive for during the foreseeable future. This session will focus on how to integrate and deliver the appropriate messages.

  2. Concurrent Session 2: Pinpointing Facts —Saying What You Mean and Meaning What You Say—Part 1
When you think about it, clear communication is critical to the success of managers and employees alike. There is not a single management activity that is effective unless the manager clearly communicates. Can you imagine a manager trying to teach or delegate a task if he/she is not clear? What happens when a manager gives corrective feedback that is not objective or understandable?

A technique known as Pinpointing Facts helps managers communicate problems or issues in specific, measurable terms, staying away from commonly used label words (such as bad attitude) that can be misinterpreted. Putting pinpointing into practice promotes understanding and agreement between all parties.

This session will be part of a two-part sessions. Attendees who choose to attend this session should plan to attend the second segment at 11:15 a.m.

Concurrent Sessions

  1. Concurrent Session 1: HR & Business Ethics: A Lesson from the Downturn
The current financial crisis has put business ethics back in the headlines, and we have to ask ourselves: What more can HR professionals do to create ethical business cultures that will deter these questionable business practices in the future? This presentation looks at the six basic building blocks of a comprehensive business ethics program, the ethics requirements mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and research data from several recent studies, including SHRM's 2008 survey, "The Ethics Landscape in American Business." Participants will also take away a better sense of how to get employees excited about ethics using innovative tools such as Cisco's "Ethics Idol" program.
  2. Concurrent Session 2: Succession Planning
The economic downturn of the past 18 months has somewhat masked an issue that has been known for a number of years, that of an aging workforce. Many Executives and Managers in the insurance industry will be eligible for retirement in the next 5-7 years. This session provides a contrast between the traditional “names in boxes” approach to succession planning and a demand driven talent management approach that is based on alignment with business need.

Concurrent Sessions

  1. Concurrent Session 1: Employee Engagement Case Study
When an employee’s voice is heard and they are allowed to provide input into matters that affect them in the work environment, amazing things happen. The wisdom of everyone in the room is considered and it frees all from the constraints of position, learning styles, IQ levels and personality types.

WORLD CAFÉ is a simple process for bringing people together around questions that matter. It is founded on the assumption that people have the capacity to work together and can be creative in problem solving when they are actively engaged.

PEMCO Insurance Company has successfully used the techniques of WORLD CAFE, Open Space and Appreciative Inquiry with all levels from non exempt groups in Customer Service to the Board of Directors and have provided leadership and pro bono consultative services to not for profit groups in the community in using these engagement techniques.

In this informative session you will learn from the experience of PEMCO Insurance Company, how to conduct a World Café, how to use the information acquired successfully and how to increase your participation across levels in the work environment. You will also leave with a toolkit that will help create engagement opportunities in your company.
