Introspection

Insulated in America

Jon Gorman | Interim Editor

In general, we Americans lead rather insular lives. In reading 47 front-page headlines on Aug. 3 from nine of the nation's 10 largest newspapers (does the New York Post really count?), International headlines consisted of the following: the Lebanese/Israeli conflict; Fidel Castro's health following surgery and the future of Cuba; Iraq; and one obscure reference to an L.A. art exhibit in Paris. The remaining headlines - more than 60 percent of the total - demanded the attention of readers to domestic issues.
