Life Comes At You Fast

Ad Campaign Uses Humor to Deliver a Core Human Truth.

By Jon Gorman

The screen fills with the image of Fabio. His sculpted, chiseled chest peeks through a sheer pirate shirt as his long, tousled hair blows in the breeze. He's standing on a gondola, rowing, in the heart of Venice, Italy. His beloved is a breathtaking beauty with dark, alluring eyes who coyly smiles and shyly glances up at her gorgeous gondolier as a white horse with a flowing mane flashes on the screen. Then, surrounded by fluffy clouds, a flower slowly opens and Fabio blows petals that resemble feathers into the air as the gondola winds its way under a bridge. The beautiful woman turns her head, ever so slowly, with a knowing smile and downcast eyes. The air fills with love and romance. As she reaches out to accept a rose, her expression instantaneously changes to horror as an arthritic hand stretches forward and tired lips mouth her a kiss. The heroine is without her hero - she is now floating on the water with an old man, his luxurious locks replaced by stringy white hair as he struggles to steer the cumbersome gondola down a Venetian canal. Years earlier, the man's powerful arms and broad shoulders would have handled the task effortlessly with precision and strength. Now, forced to continue working well into his twilight years, he continues to labor because he grew old before realizing what was happening - before he had time to plan.
