For many in southern Louisiana, August 26, 2005, was just another Friday night. Sure, a hurricane was churning in the Gulf of Mexico. But reports had the storm - Katrina was its name - tracking toward the Florida panhandle. Only the backside, which carries the least damaging winds, was expected to extend as far west as New Orleans.
