GRAPEVINE, Texas (Sept. 17, 2007) – U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., has been named the 2007 Federal Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC). Nelson, who also served as an insurance company CEO as well as Nebraska’s top insurance regulator and its governor, was announced as the award winner during NAMIC’s Annual Convention here.
“Senator Nelson is known for his exceptional knowledge and understanding of the property/casualty industry as well as the important role that insurance plays in the economy,” said NAMIC President and CEO Chuck Chamness. “NAMIC is pleased to present this prestigious award to such an outstanding leader.”
The award was created in honor of Benjamin Franklin, who founded America’s first successful mutual insurance company, The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. The company continues serving its policyholders to this day and remains a strong member of NAMIC.
“Senator Nelson has been a strong proponent of economic opportunity and open competition and continues to work to protect the free-market environment,” Chamness said. “He is a firm believer in states’ rights and understands the importance of the states’ role in regulating the property/casualty insurance industry and that any type of reform should take place at the state level.”
Nelson thanked NAMIC for the award and for helping him work on many important issues.
“The insurance industry serves our country so well and serves our people in so many different ways,” Nelson said. “I am proud to receive this Benjamin Franklin Award and am very much aware of his instituting the concept of mutual insurance - taking care of one another.”
The actual presentation was taped recently in Nelson’s Capitol Hill office and was shown during the Opening General Session at NAMIC's 112th annual convention.
