NAMIC Joins Board of Directors of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates)

Washington, D.C. - The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) announced today that NAMIC is now a voting insurance member on the Board of Directors of Advocates.

Advocates' Board is comprised of leading property/casualty insurers and consumer, medical, public health and safety groups (list follows) that work together to pass highway and auto safety laws and regulations in Congress, executive branch agencies and state legislatures. Founded in 1895, NAMIC is a full-service national trade association with more than 1,400 member companies.

"We are very pleased to support Advocates of Highway and Auto Safety," said NAMIC's President & CEO Charles M. Chamness. "This is an excellent fit for our diverse membership and a meaningful way to make a contribution toward protecting lives and the property of our companies' policyholders. Advocates has an excellent reputation and is dedicated and highly successful in the field of public policy advocacy that leads to safer cars, better drivers and an improved roadway environment."

Judith Lee Stone, president of Advocates, was pleased to welcome NAMIC as a member of Advocates. She said, "Having national trade associations affiliated with Advocates supports our mission in important ways. So many of our key issues, such as child passenger safety, teen driving, and the economic costs to society associated with motor vehicle crashes are also of concern to NAMIC members, and they are deeply involved at the grassroots level where so much influence resides."

Advocates' insurance co-chair, Herman Brandau, said, "State Farm is a member of NAMIC, and we also applaud their decision to join Advocates and welcome them to this unique and effective table."

Besides State Farm, NAMIC joins Allstate, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, USAA, Nationwide and Unitrin as insurance members on the Board of Directors. The Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America and the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents are also board members.

Non-insurance members are the American College of Emergency Physicians; the American Public Health Association; Center for Auto Safety; Consumer Federation of America; Emergency Nurses Association; Kids And Cars; Police Foundation; Public Citizen; Trauma Foundation; and Whirlwind Wheelchair International.

NAMIC is headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind., and has a federal affairs office in Washington, D.C. NAMIC has represented mutual insurance companies and the insurance industry for 111 years. Advocates'offices are in Washington, D.C. It was formed in 1989.
