PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Oct. 3, 2005) – John W. Fisher, retired president of Auto-Owners Group, Lansing, Mich., is the recipient of the highest honor bestowed by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) -- the 2005 Chairman’s Award. Fisher was recognized during the Opening General Session of NAMIC’s 110th Annual Convention held at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Phoenix, Ariz.
The NAMIC Chairman’s Award is designed to recognize leadership, accomplishment and outstanding service to the association and the insurance industry. Fisher was cited for his “untiring commitment and leadership as NAMIC chairman, as a member of the board of directors and as a true believer in the high value and crucial industry role of all mutual property/casualty insurance companies.”
During his year as chairman, Fisher emphasized the importance of all mutual insurance companies being proactive and vigilant in meeting the challenges to reform the state regulation of insurance.
"John Fisher believes in mutuality. A man of the highest integrity and character, John has served the association and its members, both large and small, in the mutual spirit of 'what's good for our policyholders is good for our industry,’” said Wayne F. White, CPA, PFMM, NAMIC’s 2004-2005 chairman and president of Home Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Conway, Ark.
Fisher joined Auto-Owners Group in 1976 and became its president in 1993, retiring in 2005. He has served on the board of directors of the Insurance Education Foundation, as well as being both a board member and chairman of the Mutual Reinsurance Bureau and NAMIC’s Property Casualty Conference. He served as the association’s chairman of the board from 2002 to 2003.
