NAMIC Staff Directors Take Key ALEC Task Force Roles

INDIANAPOLIS (May 17, 2005)—Two National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies staff members have assumed new roles on key task forces of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a national organization of state legislators.

During the state legislator organization’s Spring Task Force Summit held in Savannah, Ga., April 29-30, NAMIC Senior Director of State Advocacy Neil Alldredge was selected as the Private Sector Chair of the Insurance Subcommittee of the Commerce, Insurance and Economic Development Task Force. Colorado State Sen. David Owen was named as the task force’s Public Sector Chair.

The newly reconstituted subcommittee held its first meeting during the summit and identified the issues it will examine. Among these are rate modernization for insurance products and the application of Sarbanes-Oxley requirements to nonpublic insurance companies.

“The committee will also consider a Regulatory Accountability Model Act which will call for the sunset of regulations and for a fiscal note calculating the monetary impact of each regulation,” said Alldredge.

The Insurance Sub-Committee will also look at issues affecting the Life and Health industries.

NAMIC Director of Public Policy Robert Detlefsen became a member of ALEC’s Civil Justice Task Force. The Task Force works to restore fairness and predictability to the civil justice system through policy publications, state-level issue briefings, and the development of model laws. In the most recent legislative session, state lawmakers across the country introduced more than 100 bills based on ALEC’s legal reform model legislation.

At NAMIC, Alldredge is responsible for development and execution of all advocacy strategies before state legislatures and various legislative and regulatory organizations, such as ALEC. He also supervises NAMIC’s state affairs managers who cover all 50 states.

At NAMIC, Detlefsen develops and directs public policy, communication and media relations strategies in support of NAMIC strategic objectives. He conducts public policy research and analysis, and coordinates the development of NAMIC’s issue agenda and advocacy campaigns.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is the nation’s largest nonpartisan, individual membership organization of state legislators, with over 2,400 legislator members from all fifty states.
