NAMIC Supports Prohibition on Billing for Emergency Response Services in Massachusetts

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies offered testimony in support of legislation, S. 489, that would prohibit cities and towns from seeking reimbursement for the costs of any police, fire, or other emergency response.

“Police, fire, and other emergency services are basic governmental services already financed by our tax dollars,” said John Murphy, NAMIC’s state affairs director for the Northeast region. “It would effectively be double taxation if folks had to reimburse municipalities every time they access public safety services.”

Murphy noted that if the legislation is enacted, Massachusetts would be joining 13 other states that have banned municipalities from billing for emergency responses.
