Accessing, Obtaining Insurance Documents in Wisconsin May Soon Be Easier

While Wisconsin is already one of 28 states that allow licensed drivers to prove their insurance coverage electronically, additional legislation is needed to enable insurance consumers in the state to access and receive insurance documents online, the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies said today.

That may soon change, however, as a measure sponsored by Sen. Frank Lasee, R-1st District, will get a hearing tomorrow at the state Capitol by the Senate Insurance and Housing Committee. A similar bill has been proposed by Rep. Chad Weininger, R-4th District, in the House.

NAMIC supports both legislative proposals.

“Their legislation will reduce cost and clutter, and keep Wisconsin a leader in green, consumer-friendly innovation,” said Mark Johnston, NAMIC’s state affairs manager for the Midwest. “At the same time, the bills protect important privacy rights and respect the choices of customers who want to continue to be served by traditional methods.”

Lasee is the sponsor of Senate Bill 292 and Weininger is sponsor of Assembly Bill 373. NAMIC’s Johnston is optimistic the legislation will ultimately pass and be signed into law. “It only makes sense that with the growing use of smartphones and tablets to more conveniently handle everyday tasks, the same technology be allowed to access and receive insurance documents,” he said.

“Not only will this be a huge convenience for insurance consumers in Wisconsin, it will also significantly reduce paper and printing consumption for insurance companies cutting both costs and environmental impact,” Johnston noted. “Senator Lasee and Representative Weininger deserve the thanks of Wisconsin consumers for their initiative on this issue.”

NAMIC is the largest property/casualty insurance trade association in the country, with more than 135 million policyholders served by member companies. There are 190 NAMIC member companies doing business in Wisconsin, including 115 companies headquartered in the state, underwriting 51 percent of all property/casualty insurance in the state.
