NAMIC Adds John Hair to Washington Office

John Hair, a veteran lobbyist with nearly eight years of experience, is joining the Washington, D.C., office of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, the largest trade association representing property/casualty insurance companies.

Hair has been named as NAMIC’s newest federal affairs director. He will focus on helping the industry pass a reauthorization of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, which protects the economy in the wake of a terrorist attack, and fighting to prevent any rollbacks in the recent reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program.

“The government may shut down but NAMIC continues to work on behalf of our members, and John will be a key part of our efforts,” said Jimi Grande, senior vice president of federal and political affairs for NAMIC. “As many in Congress are hearing now, there are some things that Congress cannot let fall by the wayside. Protecting the economy from the threat of terrorism through TRIA and ensuring that a healthy NFIP will be there for communities affected by flooding are part of those obligations.”

Hair, 33, comes to NAMIC from the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, where he served as director of government relations. He also previously worked at Carrying Capacity Network and at the Florida-based law firm Aylstock, Witkin & Sasser, PLC.

Hair’s father served the country for more than 21 years in the U.S. Army, and as a military brat Hair moved around a few times in his youth. Born in Louisiana, the family shortly thereafter moved to Korea for a year. He considers his home state Kentucky, having moved there by the time he was 4 years old. Just prior to high school his father was assigned to Germany, where he was able to travel much of Europe before going to college at the University of West Florida.

NAMIC represents 1,400 property/casualty insurance companies serving more than 135 million auto, home, and business policyholders writing more than $196 billion in premiums. NAMIC member companies account for 50 percent of the automobile/homeowners market and 31 percent of the business insurance market.

“Our membership includes the smallest companies to the largest, and they’re affected in different ways by many of the issues in Washington as insurers and as businesses,” Grande said. “Issues like TRIA and preserving the National Flood Insurance Program are vital not only to insurers but also to their policyholders and our nation’s economy. As we face these and myriad other challenges in Washington, D.C., we’re glad to have John on our team.”
