Minnesota: Bill Curbing Storm-Chaser Abuses Passes Legislature
NAMIC's Minnesota state trade advocacy partner, the Insurance Federation of Minnesota, reports that Senate File 1886 is on its way to the governor. The bill prohibits a residential contactor from promising or advertising that it rebate or pay all or part of an insured’s deductible. The bill also allows consumers 72 hours to cancel a repair contract after the insured learns that the claim was denied. (Posted: 5/11/2010)

Minnesota: Senate Committee Defeats Bill Pursued by Litigation Funding Industry, Trial Bar
NAMIC’s state trade association advocacy partner, the Insurance Federation of Minnesota, reports that after hearing testimony from Minnesotans for Lawsuit Reform, the state’s civil justice reform coalition, the Senate Judiciary Committee shelved SF 2704, dealing with the litigation loan industry. Minnesota Members in Washington for 2009 CCP
NAMIC member companies from Minnesota traveled to Washington, D.C., last Wednesday to participate in the 2009 Congressional Contact Program. The group had successful meetings with its state delegation and handed out four Benjamin Franklin Public Policy award. This was Minnesota's 20th year participating in CCP. (Posted: 6/23/2009)

Minnesota: Senate Committees Address One-way Loser Pays Legislation
The trial bar’s “One-way Loser Pays” bill had a busy time in the Minnesota Senate last week. The original SF 528 was very similar to the punitive, unbalanced House File 417, which is awaiting consideration on the House floor. NAMIC and its trade association partners, the Insurance Federation of Minnesota and the Minnesota Association of Farm Mutual Insurance Companies, have strongly opposed that version of the legislation. Minnesota: Senate Votes to Reject Bill to Ban Credit-based Insurance Scoring
The Minnesota Senate Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee voted 5-4 last Tuesday to defeat Senate File 263, which would have banned the use of credit-based insurance scores as an underwriting tool. Voting in favor of the bill were Sens. Mary Olson, the sponsor; Linda Scheid; John Marty; and Kevin Dahle. Voting against the bill were Sens. Chris Gerlach, Ray Vandeveer, Dan Sparks, James Metzen, and Dan Skogen, a bi-partisan grouping. (Posted: 3/31/2009)

Minnesota: Trial Bar’s One-way Loser Pays Bill Takes Another Step Forward
The Insurance Federation of Minnesota and the Minnesota Association of Farm Mutual Insurance Companies report that HF 417, after being slightly amended by the House Commerce and Labor Committee, received a relatively short hearing by the House Civil Justice Committee before being favorably recommended by that committee after a voice vote. Minnesota: NAMIC Slams Latest Trial Bar Bad Idea
NAMIC submitted testimony to the Minnesota House Commerce and Labor Committee in opposition to House File 417, which would essentially require insurers to pay unreasonable interest of 12 percent and the plaintiff’s attorney’s fees in any lawsuit involving commercial or professional coverage unless the insurer prevailed on all aspects of the litigation.
