Maine: Sponsor Drops Support of NAMIC-Opposed Bad Faith Bill, Cites Bureau Bulletin, Industry Testimony

The Committee on Insurance and Financial Services gave bad faith legislation opposed by NAMIC an “ought not to pass” recommendation at the request of the bill’s sponsor who explained his change of heart by citing a bulletin issued by the Maine Bureau of Insurance as well as “very compelling” testimony from the insurance industry. Maine: NAMIC Testifies Against Bill That Would Allow Third-party Unfair Claims Suits

NAMIC testified at an April 27 hearing in opposition to trial bar-backed legislation to expand Maine’s unfair claims practices statute to allow for direct actions by insureds and third-party claimants alike and to provide for recovery of punitive damages, attorneys fees and costs. Maine: Bureau Joins Industry in Opposing Alternative Insured Value Bill

West Virginia Leads Nation Again in Frequency of Deer-Vehicle Collisions; Michigan, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Arkansas Round Out Top Five

For the second year in a row the vehicles most likely to collide with a deer are in West Virginia. Using its deer claims data from the last half of 2007 and the first half of 2008 and motor vehicle registration counts by state from the Federal Highway Administration, State Farm estimates the chances of a West Virginia vehicle colliding with a deer during the next 12 months at 1 in 45.
