Georgia: Knox Out As House Insurance Chair

Rep. Tom Knox will no longer serve as House Insurance Chair, following a leadership shake-up last week. Newly elected House Speaker David Ralston has instead appointed Rep. John Meadows. Knox will continue to serve as a member of the insurance committee. (Posted: 1/19/2010)


Southeast Region 2010 Legislative Preview

Several Southeast region state legislators have already been busy filing bills related to topics of interest on NAMIC’s state legislative agenda. NAMIC Announces 2009 Federal Legislator of the Year: Rep. David Scott of Georgia

Every year, NAMIC presents the Federal Legislator of the Year Award to a legislator in recognition of his/her outstanding leadership on financial services issues and dedication to public service. Previous recipients include Rep. Richard Baker (R-La.) in 2006, Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) in 2007 and Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) in 2008. (Posted: 9/22/2009)


Georgia Members in Washington for 2009 CCP

Last Thursday, NAMIC member companies from Georgia traveled to Washington DC to participate in the 2009 Congressional Contact Program. The group held 11 meetings with members of the Georgia delegation and handed out 4 Benjamin Franklin Public Policy Awards. This was Georgia's 11th year participating in CCP. (Posted: 6/30/2009)

Georgia: Bill Would Apply Antitrust Law to Insurers

Georgia House Bill 96, the Georgia Free Enterprise and Antitrust Act of 2009, would establish a state antitrust law but specifically would not include the federal antitrust exemptions available under the McCarran-Ferguson Act, in addition to other provisions of concern to insurers and the entire business community. Report: Insurers to Pay $25.2 Billion in 2008 Catastrophe Claims

U.S. property/casualty insurers are expected to pay homeowners and businesses $25.2 billion for 2008 property losses from 37 catastrophes — the fourth highest cost in a decade and the highest frequency in a decade, according to preliminary analysis by ISO’s Property Claim Services Unit. West Virginia Leads Nation Again in Frequency of Deer-Vehicle Collisions; Michigan, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Arkansas Round Out Top Five

For the second year in a row the vehicles most likely to collide with a deer are in West Virginia. Using its deer claims data from the last half of 2007 and the first half of 2008 and motor vehicle registration counts by state from the Federal Highway Administration, State Farm estimates the chances of a West Virginia vehicle colliding with a deer during the next 12 months at 1 in 45. New Study Suggests Putting Off Driver Licensure to Save Lives
