2010 FAC Issue Update - Building Codes

Not long ago, NAMIC created the Building Code Coalition (BCC) to help ensure the passage of legislation that would incentivize the adoption and enforcement of nationally recognized statewide building codes. The coalition was successful in having a bill introduced in the House of Representatives last Congress, and the coalition has been targeting this base of support to help move legislation in this Congress. Building Code Legislation Included in Broad Mitigation Package

The NAMIC-led Building Code Coalition took a step toward passage of H.R. 2592, the Safe Building Code Incentive Act, legislation that would incentivize the adoption of enforceable, statewide building codes. The bill was introduced in late May by Reps. Michael Arcuri, D-NY, and Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., and referred to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, on which both men sit. Building a Stronger Nation, One State at a Time

Let’s face it – building codes are a somewhat boring little corner of the insurance public policy world. But they’re an important cornerstone in protecting lives and property when disaster strikes. NAMIC Forges Ahead on Building Code Legislation

NAMIC Leads Building Code Coalition Efforts

Last week, NAMIC and members of the Building Code Coalition wrote a letter to Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., and Ranking Member Richard Shelby, R-Ala., in support of S. 2458, the Community Building Code Administration Grant Act. The legislation is one of a very few pieces of federal legislation specifically focused on the values and benefits of promoting effective state and local administration of modern building codes. Oregon: NAMIC Joins Citizens Against Unsafe Housing to Oppose Ballot Measure 63

In Oregon’s general election Nov. 4, voters will have the opportunity to vote “no” on Ballot Measure 63, Exempts Specified Property Owners from Building Permit Requirements for Improvements Valued at/under $35,000. (Posted: 8/26/2008)


House Action Increases Hopes for Building Codes Passage

Legislation passed by the House last week is a significant step in our efforts to see meaningful building code reforms. By a voice vote, members of the chamber approved H.R. 4461, the Community Building Code Administration Grant Act. (Posted: 7/15/2008)


NAMIC’s Advocacy for Stronger Building Codes Produces Important Congressional Approval

Our push to encourage states to adopt and enforce stronger building codes to stave off losses from natural disasters has moved the issue forward in Congress.
