NAMIC Sends Letter to Key Congressional Leaders

Secretary Geithner Testifies Before Congress on Administration’s Plans for Regulatory Reform

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner returned to Capitol Hill last week to answer questions regarding the Obama administration’s recently released white paper on financial services regulatory reform. He testified Thursday morning at a hearing before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Administration Releases Plans for Financial Services Regulatory Reform

The push to overhaul the nation’s financial regulatory system is expected to take center stage in Washington this week. The Obama administration is expected to unveil a reform proposal tomorrow, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is scheduled to testify before the House Financial Services Committee on Thursday. Proposed Financial Products Safety Commission Gains Traction

There has been an increasing push in Washington recently to create a Financial Product Safety Commission that would apply the same type of consumer protections to financial products that currently exist for other consumer products such as pharmaceuticals and children’s toys. The new agency would be modeled after the Consumer Product Safety Commission and would be given jurisdiction over improving public education on financial products such as mortgages and credit cards.
