Natural Disaster Policy Should Not Incentivize Risky Behavior, NAMIC Tells Congress

Florida Members in Washington for 2009 CCP
Last Tuesday, NAMIC member companies from Florida traveled to Washington DC to participate in the 2009 Congressional Contact Program. Representing the state was Dale Hammond, president of HomeWise Insurance Co. out of Tampa. This was Florida's second CCP trip this spring - in May, Susan Mack, senior vice president of the Main Street America Group came to Capitol Hill. This is Florida's 2nd year participating in CCP. Temporary Extension of Flood Program Expected After Recess
With an ambitious agenda and promises to address the financial crisis, energy and climate change, healthcare, appropriations, and immigration, Congress will not have time to deal with the reform and reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) before its September 30 expiration date. Instead they have decided to do yet another temporary extension until March 31, 2010, which will be introduced in the House of Representatives immediately following the July 4 recess. Surplus Lines Legislation Introduced in the Senate
On June 25, Senators Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Mel Martinez, R-Fla., introduced S. 1363, the Nonadmitted and Reinsurance Reform Act of 2009. The legislation would modernize the regulation of non-admitted insurance and reinsurance markets. Senators Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, cosponsored the legislation. NAMIC Sends Letter to Key Congressional Leaders
Last week, NAMIC sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of both the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. On the heels of the Obama Administration’s release of the white paper on financial services regulatory reform both committees have scheduled hearings considering various aspects of the plan as they begin to craft legislation. Aftermarket Parts Legislation Introduced
On Thursday, Rep. Zoe Lofgren D-Calif., introduced the “Access to Repair Parts Act,” H.R. 3059, in the House of Representatives and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-RI, introduced companion legislation in the Senate. The bills would guarantee consumers the ability to choose high-quality, low-cost alternative collision replacement parts when repairing their vehicles. This “repair clause” legislation would amend current patent law and preserve competition in the automotive replacement parts market, providing options for budget-conscious consumers and helping to keep businesses afloat in these tough economic times.
