Embattled House Democrats Fire Back on Ethics Violations

Though Congress is still in recess for another couple of weeks, there is no lack of controversy on Capitol Hill. Two House incumbents who made headlines after been charged with violating Congressional ethics rules earlier this summer, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, and Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., are back in the news as they fight for their political lives. (Posted: 8/31/2010)

NAMIC’s Congressional Contact Program 25th Year in Review

Over the past year we have seen a quickly changing political climate. Major pieces of legislation, such as Healthcare and Financial Regulatory Reform, have been introduced and passed. One of the most important things we can do as private citizens is to find a way to get involved in the political process, to make sure our voices are heard when Congress makes key decisions. Here at NAMIC, our Congressional Contact Program (CCP) has allowed our members to do just that! For 25 years CCP has helped to connect our membership with their representatives and staff here on Capitol Hill, allowing NAMIC members to meet face to face to discuss the issues that are most important to our industry. With CCP’s quarto-centennial year almost behind us, we are proud of the commitment our members have made to getting involved. (Posted: 8/31/2010)

GOP Plans for Future Majority

With the mid-term elections a few short months away, speculation regarding the results has been rampant. Reporters have been questioning Republican congressional staff on what they anticipate the agenda to be in the new Congress assuming that the GOP takes at least the House. While not taking for granted that they will in fact win a majority, it seems that there are plans in the works to utilize any advantage the mid-terms may bring. (Posted: 8/31/2010)

Primary Colors

This primary season has been something to watch. Incumbents are being knocked out of their races early; pundits are baffled; and professional prognosticators continue to be surprised. Really though, the excitement has come not from the actual number of incumbents being taken down – which is not (yet) historically high – but from the high-profile losses that have occurred. Whatever the case, there can be no doubt that sitting senators and representatives, from freshmen to party leadership, are having to work extra hard this year to hold on to their seats. Anyone skeptical of that should speak with the still-titular head of the Republican Party, Sen. John McCain, who for a time was in danger of losing his own primary to a former congressman, J.D. Hayworth. (Posted: 8/31/2010)

August Primaries Offer Preview of November Elections

On Tuesday, August 24, five states - Arizona, Florida, Alaska, Vermont and Oklahoma - held primary elections and the results were a mix of predictable and surprising. However, the anti-incumbent sentiment than many feel will be the hallmark of the November elections has proven to be a reality for both Democrats and Republicans. (Posted: 8/31/2010)

Natural Disaster Bills Linger in the 111th Congress

The middle of August traditionally marks the halfway point in the annual hurricane season for the Atlantic Ocean and experts have anticipated a busy and dangerous summer of storms. The aftermath of any major storm hitting the United States could be devastating, not only from a loss perspective, but also because of the potential response from the federal government. Although there are only a few weeks in September on the legislative calendar before Congress adjourns for a final campaign push, there remain several natural disaster issues on the table that may be addressed. Implementation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Looms

The ink is barely dry from President Obama’s signature enacting H.R. 4173, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, but those in Washington are already talking about the avalanche of new work that has been created for the executive branch. It has been estimated that the Dodd-Frank Act will require federal agencies to develop 520 new rules, conduct 81 congressional studies, and issue 93 reports. (Posted: 8/17/2010)

Allegations of Corruption Stain Congressional Calendar

Instead of turning to important legislative initiatives to address unemployment and provide tax benefits to small business before leaving for August recess, Congress found itself once again addressing allegations of impropriety and misconduct – clouding the already unclear legislative schedule leading into November’s mid-term elections.
