The rash of natural disasters seems worse than usual. In the past few weeks, we have seen unprecedented amounts of snow fall in the northeast, catastrophic earthquakes in the Caribbean and South America. And tsunamis that fortunately did not do much damage. The temblor in Chile should have been more devastating than the one to hit Haiti. It was an 8.8 magnitude versus a 7 magnitude, and according to science, for each whole number increase on the Richter scale, the amplitude of the ground motion recorded by a seismograph goes up 10 times.
