“We applaud the committee for voting today to strengthen the National Flood Insurance Program and ease the burden on the taxpayers. As we watch the Mississippi waters rise, the need for a federal program to provide flood insurance is clear. Through the legislation approved by the committee today a stronger National Flood Insurance Program will be better able to help policyholders recover from flood losses without having to rely on bailouts from the federal government. We look forward to swift House action, and join with members of the Committee in urging the Senate to take up the bill.
The committee also considered a number of amendments to the bill today. While these amendments involve policy issues worthy of discussion, we urge members of Congress to focus on the main goal of swiftly enacting much needed reforms to the program and to not let smaller issues block the progress of HR 1309.”
