Threat to Antitrust Exemption Highlights NAMIC's 2007 Program

While many important topics are a concern for property/casualty insurers - especially mutual companies - NAMIC has identified the following as those that pose the most serious threats to our industry:

"Our government affairs department will continue to work with members of Congress on these important, timely issues in the months ahead," said Carl Parks, NAMIC's senior vice president, government affairs. "Not since the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act have we been faced with one of the biggest industry challenges as we look to congressional threats to the McCarran-Ferguson Act."

Parks said NAMIC's members will play a key role in the efforts to spread the association's message on its targeted topics. "We will utilize our grassroots advocacy network, the Congressional Contact Program, to help educate members of Congress and advance our legislative agenda," Parks said. "As in the case of Gramm-Leach-Bliley, it will be extremely beneficial again to have this very established and highly successful turnkey operation in place."

NAMIC's CCP is unique in the insurance industry in that it provides an opportunity for its members to meet with lawmakers and staffs from their particular states. This year, CCP kicks off its 2007 season with New York on March 26-27.

NAMIC identified the legislative initiatives for 2007 during its annual Federal Affairs Committee Meeting, Feb. 7, in New Orleans.

The committee's mission is to monitor, generate awareness of, and proactively impact legislative and regulatory issues affecting the mutual property and casualty industry at the federal level.

Benjamin Franklin Public Policy Award

Every two years, NAMIC presents their coveted Benjamin Franklin Public Policy Award© to lawmakers who have supported a stronger insurance market at least 75 percent of the time. This is demonstrated based on their support of NAMIC's position on certain roll call votes taken, or being a principal player/sponsor on legislation affected the property/casualty insurance industry, during the previous Congress.
