The Day Has Finally Come

Marketplace for MutualsThe 118th Annual Convention festivities began on Sept. 23 as the doors to NAMIC’s Marketplace for Mutuals opened to delegates. More than 100 industry-specific exhibitors are onsite offering innovative products and services catering to the property/casualty insurance industry.

The newly named exhibit show reflects the value exhibitors bring to the convention. Vendors make the exhibit show the marketplace for mutual insurers to investigate new business solutions and products.

Delegates and guests experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch artists from two local art studios/galleries – Matamuros and Bherd Studios – create a one-of-a-kind mural to commemorate NAMIC’s time in Seattle.

Many other new and exciting changes are on tap in the exhibit hall. The Marketplace for Mutuals will be open special hours exclusively for executives and managers on Tuesday, Sept. 24 to allow top management the focused opportunity to explore the exhibits and conduct business in a secure, one-on-one atmosphere.

Special activities are also planned to enhance the business environment and make time spent with exhibitors more valuable. Along with breakfast, an appearance and presentation by Major Cohen of Starbucks, a Starbucks coffee tasting, and shoe-shine services by Nordstrom department store are on tap.

Also on Tuesday, the talented crew from the renowned Pure Food Fish Market will be on hand to display their skill in the fine art of fish tossing. From fish tossing came the FISH Philosophy, a four-prong approach to life: be there, play, make their day, and choose your attitude.

  • Be There: When people need you, they need all of you. Setting aside distractions and judgments to be fully present is a sign of respect. It improves communication and strengthens relationships.
  • Play: You can be serious about your work without taking yourself so seriously. Play is a mindset more than a specific activity. It allows you to throw yourself with enthusiasm and creativity into whatever you are doing, in a way that is natural, not forced. "Playing” with ideas helps you find solutions to everyday challenges.
  • Make Their Day: Simple gestures of thoughtfulness, thanks, and recognition make people feel appreciated and valued. When you make someone else feel good, you feel good too.
  • Choose Your Attitude: To actually choose how you respond to life, not just react, you must be intentional. When you get up, decide who you want to "be" today. Moment-to-moment awareness is key. Ask yourself throughout the day, "What is my attitude right now? Is it helping the people who depend on me? Is it helping me to be most effective?"

Closing out the day – and the Marketplace for Mutuals – will be an ice cream social, raffle drawings, and a very special St. Baldrick’s head shaving when NAMICO CEO and President Tim Sullivan will go under the clippers to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation in support of childhood cancer research.
