Several states in the Northeast bucked the national trend this election season. In Massachusetts, state government remained in the Democrats camp, while the governor’s offices in Connecticut and Vermont switched from Republican to Democrat, while the Republican Party was replaced in the Rhode Island governor’s mansion with an Independent. None of these states saw large Republican shifts in their legislatures. Add to that New York, where the sitting governor is a Democrat, but a different kind of Democrat, who cruised to victory, but it’s still not certain which way the state Senate will go.
