Gov. Rod Blagojevich recently signed HB 4683 and HB 4687 into law.
HB 4683 prohibits the installation of any fire safety device such as a sprinkler or smoke detector if the device is not designed or capable of performing such life safety or fire protection function. The bill also allows for the inspection of these devices.
HB 4687 authorizes fire protection districts to create programs that award grants to certain property owners who install and maintain sprinkler or other fire suppression systems.
“These bills are important steps that will increase the safety of Illinois citizens," said Mark Johnston, NAMIC’s state affairs manager for the Midwest. "Everyone who worked on behalf of the bills should be commended for their efforts.”
