NAMIC Leads Building Code Coalition Efforts

Last week, NAMIC and members of the Building Code Coalition wrote a letter to Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., and Ranking Member Richard Shelby, R-Ala., in support of S. 2458, the Community Building Code Administration Grant Act. The legislation is one of a very few pieces of federal legislation specifically focused on the values and benefits of promoting effective state and local administration of modern building codes.

The legislation would create a national program providing awards to local governments for building code administration and enforcement. Specifically, the legislation would require the secretary of Housing and Urban Development to award grants, on a competitive basis and with federal matching funds, to qualified local building code enforcement departments to increase staffing, provide staff training, increase staff competence and professional qualifications, support individual certification or departmental accreditation, or for capital expenditures specifically dedicated to department administration.

Other members of the coalition signing the letter include the American Insurance Association, State Farm Insurance Companies, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, ALFA Insurance Companies, American Family Mutual Insurance Company, Baldwin Mutual Insurance Co., Inc., Farmers Insurance Group, Allstate Insurance Company, International Code Council, and Solutia Inc.

Last year, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed similar legislation, H.R. 4461, introduced by Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan.

Direct questions to NAMIC’s Senior Federal Affairs Director Marliss McManus.
