Legislation passed by the House last week is a significant step in our efforts to see meaningful building code reforms. By a voice vote, members of the chamber approved H.R. 4461, the Community Building Code Administration Grant Act.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., authorizes $100 million during a five-year period to go to local and state governments for building code administration and enforcement. The bill is a perfect compliment to H.R. 3926, the Building Code State Incentive Act of 2007.
H.R. 3926, sponsored by Rep. Doris Matsui, D - Calif., would increase the amount of federal monies available to states that enact and enforce nationally recognized statewide building codes. Specifically, it would add 4 percent to the money a state would be eligible to receive under current disaster relief legislation. The bill is currently before the House Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management.
Through our formation of the Building Codes Coalition, lobbying efforts, and NAMIC-member visits to Capitol Hill through the Congressional Contact Program, we are leading the charge on this vital issue. House passage of H.R. 4461 last week is the latest step in our success on this effort.
