Hurricane season brings not just a focus on “battening down the hatches” in the event of a storm but a heightened awareness of the availability and affordability of property insurance in Atlantic and Gulf Coast states. Coastal insurance issues will be the subject of conferences in Louisiana and North Carolina in June and July.
Louisiana Sea Grant, the Louisiana Department of Insurance, America’s Wetland Foundation, and the Louisiana State University AgCenter will co-host the fourth Presidents’ Forum on Meeting Coastal Challenges – Insurability of the Coast on June 16 at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans.
The meeting will focus on insurance issues facing the coast with emphasis on the experience of Louisiana’s coastal communities. Discussion topics include flood insurance, reinsurance, public and private providers, floodplain mapping, comprehensive planning as it relates to natural hazards, and the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. Among those who will address the forum will be Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance James J. Donelon, along with insurance commissioners from Mississippi, Florida, and North Carolina and representatives of federal, state, and private insurance organizations.
In North Carolina, the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center at Appalachian State University will present “Insuring Coastal Properties,” July 20-21 in Boone.
Discussion at the symposium will not be limited to North Carolina coastal concerns but will address regional issues. Participants scheduled to speak include North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Jim Long; George Dale, Adams and Reese law firm senior government advisor and former Mississippi insurance commissioner; Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty; South Carolina Insurance Director Scott Richardson; former South Carolina Director of Insurance Eleanor Kitzman, now of the Goldman Sachs Reinsurance Group; Smitty Harrison, South Carolina Wind and Hail Underwriting Association executive director; Leslie Chapman-Henderson, president/CEO of the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes; and Insurance Information Institute Chief Economist Steve Weisbart.
NAMIC Southeast State Affairs Manager Liz Reynolds will attend both events and report to members.
