Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen has signed HB 2547 to ban “accident taxes.” The bill moved quickly through the legislative process without controversy and with the coordinated support of the insurance industry.
Liz Reynolds, NAMIC’s Southeast state affairs manager, wrote to Bredesen after HB 2547 passed, urging him to sign the legislation as quickly as possible.
“Tennessee will join the vanguard of states taking action to ensure citizens are not subject to double taxation for core government services,” Reynolds stated in her letter. She also emphasized that “HB 2547 sends a message that all of Tennessee is open for business and its cities and towns welcome visitors and provide critical services for all.”
Similar legislation is eligible for the governor’s signature in Georgia. SB 348 passed the House on March 31. On April 1, Alabama SB 373 received a favorable report from the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs.
