Mississippi: Legislature Pushes Building Codes Adoption

The Mississippi Legislature passed HB 1465 last week in an effort to push the state farther down the road to statewide minimum building codes, and is on its way to the governor’s office.

The bill requires any county or municipality that adopts building codes after July 1, 2008, to adopt at a minimum the codes set by the Mississippi Building Codes Council. Counties and municipalities that have already adopted construction codes will have until July 1, 2010, to ensure that the codes set by the Mississippi Building Codes Council serve as the minimum for their jurisdictions.

In addition, the bill specifically provides that a portion of insurance premium tax collections be used for county and municipality staff training necessary for compliance with the codes adopted by the Mississippi Building Codes Council.

“The Coalition to Build a Safer and Stronger Mississippi recognized that uniformity is an important consideration when supporting building codes,” said Liz Reynolds, NAMIC’s Southeast state affairs manager. “HB 1465 accomplishes that for the Mississippi counties and municipalities choosing to establish standards.”
