A week after the House Banking and Insurance Committee gave HB 162 a favorable report, the bill passed the full House in a unanimous vote.
The bill would require insurers to provide motor vehicle liability insurance coverage information via an online verification system using web services. The Department of Revenue would use the system to confirm coverage prior to issuing motor vehicle registration, and law enforcement would have access to the system as well.
“NAMIC will continue to work with industry partners to monitor the bill and, if it passes, to ensure a cooperative approach to implementing the system with appropriate safeguards and resource management,” said Liz Reynolds, NAMIC's Southeast state affairs manager.
