Electronic reporting of policy data to the Department of Revenue has progressed from the brainstorming stage to the moving-legislation stage in Alabama. HB 162 was amended and given a favorable report by the House Banking and Insurance Committee last Tuesday.
The bill’s language has been the subject of much discussion and debate among insurance industry representatives, staff from the Department of Revenue, and other relevant state agencies. NAMIC Southeast state affairs manager Liz Reynolds has participated in meetings and provided feedback on this topic in an effort to assist member companies with important concerns about how such a reporting system might be set up.
“While the current version of the bill does contain amended language provided by companies, there is still concern that legislation to create a reporting system may be premature,” Reynolds noted. “In addition, insurers fully expect to be implementing higher motor vehicle liability limits and rates in the fall and would prefer not to work on an electronic motor vehicle liability reporting system until after the new limits are in place.”
