Republican voters go to the polls today in Kentucky to decide whether to give Ernie Fletcher another chance at being their nominee for governor.
Fletcher has spent much of his first term embroiled in a controversy involving the state’s employee merit system. He faces two primary challengers: Anne Northup, a former congresswoman from Louisville, and Billy Harper, a wealthy Paducah businessman.
On the Democratic side, six individuals are seeking their party’s nomination. W. Bruce Lunsford, a Louisville health-care executive, is viewed by political watchers as the likely Democratic winner.
The Kentucky primary is the first of three gubernatorial contests this year. The Mississippi primary will take place on Aug. 7 while the Louisiana primary is scheduled for Oct. 20.
David Reddick, associate director of public policy, has written an Issue Brief entitled, "Plenty of Political Intrigue Brewing in 2007 State Election Races," which examines each of this year’s gubernatorial races. The brief also briefly looks at legislative contests in Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, and Virginia this fall.
